iMac(2013) Review

Apple iMac

When Apple first reveled the new slim unibody iMac in 2012, everyone was awestruck by the thin design of the all-in-one desktop. Continuing the same minimalist design Apple has just updated the internals of the new iMac (fall 2013). Even though Apple has kept the same design with an extremely thin edge and a bulge at the back, no other all-in-one desktop has reached that level of beauty in design.
The new iMac gets the Intel's latest fourth generation processors (a.k.a Haswell) along with faster 802.11ac Wi-Fi, more powerful NVIDIA GeForce 700 graphics processors and the flash storage connected via PCIe in the flash storage or fusion drive models of the iMac.
All in all these updates don't bring about radicle change in the previous iMac experience but definitly make it more smoother and polished than the other all-in-ones in the market.

Design

Apple iMac

The design of the iMac is very appealing and elegant as the other Apple products. When looked from a specific angle from the side the system looks totally flat even though there is a bulge in the middle where all the components rest. The edge of the iMac is just 5 mm. thin. The LED-backlit LCD display now is 75% less reflective with a native resolution of 1,920x1,080-pixels on the 21.5-inch model 2,560x1,440-pixels on the 27-inch model. All the I/O ports are located on the lower left side of the curving back.
Besides the system monitor Apple continues to offer the wireless keyboard along with the magic mouse or the magic trackpad which work over the bluetooth. The keyboard is very good with wide and deep keys and the magic mouse and trackpad enhance the experience of using the mac with different gestures.

Hardware and Connectivity

                                              Apple iMac

The new iMac comes in two display sizes as the older one that are 21.5 inch and 27 inch(diagonal) and then each one of these models has two variants.
The first variant of the smaller 21.5-inch iMac comes with 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz) with 4MB L3 cache, 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 memory, 1 TB(5400-rpm) hard drive and Intel Iris Pro graphics. The second variant of the 21.5-incher has a 2.9GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz) with 6MB L3 cache, 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 memory, 1 TB(5400-rpm) hard drive and NVIDIA GeForce 750M graphics processor with 1GB of GDDR5 memory.
The bigger 27-inch iMacs have a user replaceable RAM and they all most carry the same hardware, but the only difference being in there Processors and Graphics. The following table shows the difference:

Software

                          Apple OS X
iMac comes preinstalled with Apple's latest desktop operating system, OS X Mavericks, which is a decent update from the older generation OS X Mountain Lion. It adds features like tagging, push notifications, i-cloud keychain, app nap and a lot more. According to the company there are more than 200 new features in OS X Mavericks. The OS is very easy to understand for the first users. The multi-touch gestures on the magic mouse or magic trackpad intuitive and simple. The OS X is a very stable and easy to use operating system paking a lot of power.

Final Thoughts
The new iMac is not a very essential upgrade for those having the last genration iMacs but if upgraded it will definitly improve the speed and the workflow. For the newcomers this system is one of the best out in the market even though it lacks some of the features that other all-in-one desktops have like the touchscreen. But it is a bit costly starting at Rs.99,900 for the 21 inch and Rs.139,900 for the 27 inch. Also the iMac is not as customizable (before purchace) in India as it is in other countries. Finally the iMac(2013) is an excellent product from Apple but a bit overpriced.
