After the very successful launch of the Moto X
and the Moto G in the mid-range smartphone market in India, Motorola is now
targeting the lower-end market with the launch of Moto E. The Moto E is
a step down version of the Moto G which was also just a basic
version of the Moto X. But at nearly Rs.7000 with the latest generation of
Android i.e.KitKat the Moto E is like no other smartphone in the market at this
price point.
Design
Motorola continues it simple design that it
introduced with the Moto X over to the Moto E, the only difference being on the
front as the Moto E has two chrome strips above and below the screen. The Moto
E has a 4.3inch qHD screen which has a resolution of 960x540pixels. The
upper chrome strip acts as the earpiece while the bottom one acts as
the front speaker phone. Along the top strip we also have the sensors on the
left. But one thing thats missing on the front is the front-facing camera. On
the right hand side of the phone it has a power/lock button and a volume
rocker. Both these buttons are not as clicky as we would like them to be and
they feel cheap. On the top there is a headphone jack and a noise-cancelling
microphone while at the bottom there is a micro-USB for charging. On the back
it has a 5 MP camera which is not equipped with autofocus and flash. Also the
back panel is user replacable with different colored ones which Motorola calls
"Shells" and are sold seperately. This customization is one of the
selling points of the phone. Overall the design of the Moto E is very good and
the 4.3inch form factor makes it very easy to handle.
Hardware and Specification
The Moto E is a Dual SIM phone which packs a
1.2 GHz Snapdragon 200 dual core processor along with Adreno 302 400MHz single
core GPU and 1GB of RAM. It comes preloaded with the latest Android v4.4
(KitKat) over which Motorola guarantees upgrade to Android v4.4.2. The display
as mentioned earlier is a 4.3 inch qHD display with a pixel density of 256 ppi.
It also features Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and a water repellent nano coating
from Motorola. The camera is a 5 megapixel shooter without autofocus and flash
which is a bit disappointing. The phone has a 1980 mAh battery which according
to the company lasts for 24 hours with mixed usage. There is 4GB
of internal storage of which only about 2GB is accessible. There is a
microSD card slot inside the back panel through which it can be increased upto
32GB. In terms of connectivity there is Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G.

Android 4.4 Kitkat |
Motorola being a Google company, you will always get the
latest generation of Android on the Moto E before the other smartphones running
Android. Along with the latest genration of Android the Moto E comes with
Motorola Apps like "Moto Migrate" and "Moto Assist".
Motorolla has also added the new "Alert" app which gives shortcuts
for distress calls and keeps you connected with an emergency contact. The Moto
Migrate helps you to transfer all your data from your old phone to the Moto E
wirelessly while with the Moto Assist the device lets you set up actions and
exceptions to customize it according to your needs.
Final Thoughts
The Moto E is only available via Flipkart. It is aimed at
the first time smartphone users who are looking for a good experience at a cheaper
price point. It is better than the smartphones offered by the Indian and Chinese brands. In some cases like playing a bit heavy game the phone definitly lags, which may ruin the
experience. But at nearly Rs.7000 you won't get any other Android phone as good
as the Moto E. So the Moto E is a definite BUY.
